Abstract
Currently there are various major research and technological development (RTD) initiatives running in parallel on road transport telematics in Europe. The national public authorities and administrations are looking for solutions to meet their demands in providing road users better information in order to promote cleaner, safer and more efficient traffic and transport environment. The industrial and academia stakeholders work intensively in global, pan-European, national, city and industry level to find viable and sustainable solutions for the ever increasing traffic problems. The open issue is how, when and if these activities will eventually meet to help the European society to survive on the streets and roads. The results will be there when discussing and observing the RTD work carried out. However, these results are merely pre-competitive and pre-marketable prototypes and demonstrators. The way for users of these innovative solutions is long, winding and even obscure.
