Abstract
Maintenance represents a significant challenge for operators and users of technology in the form of hardware and software components and systems. This paper is based on maintenance and availability data on machines used to manufacture synthetic diamond for applications in a diverse range of industry sectors. The core process for making synthetic diamond demands very specialized attention to the maintenance and operation of presses, thus availability and maintainability, and operations and maintenance, are practical technology management issues that have ramifications over the total life of a typical manufacturing machine.
