Abstract :
The paper deals with a fuzzy controlled brushless DC motor for a left ventricular heart assist system. The medical system consists of a bloodpump, a centrifugal pump, a brushless DC motor, a solenoid, power supply and controls. The brushless DC motor operates sensorless and is developed with respect to the special requirements of an implantable heart assist device. A fuzzy logic controller will be used to control the ventricular blood pressure and the blood volume flow (cardiac output). This approach enables the designer to describe process situations with human words in a very transparent way and to make control decision, based on linguistic rules. These rules can be generated or changed by the medical doctor for the individual application
