Abstract :
The combination of hydropower generating schemes with HVDC transmission is compared to fossil-fired power generating schemes and HVAC transmission on the Southern African continent. A technical and economic evaluation was performed. Different topologies for HVDC transmission systems are also evaluated. The work is presented with reference to experience gained during a case study for further exploitation of the hydroelectric potential of the Zambezi River in Mozambique
