Abstract :
This paper describes firstly the principles of dynamic modeling of CERN´s super proton synchrotron (SPS) accelerator. The SPS dynamic model adequately represents internal power system structure and SPS interactions with the supply grid. Since the SPS consists of 48 converters and 48 transformers, the modeling goal is the development of an equivalent model with a reasonably low number of converters in order to reduce model complexity. The SPS control system is also simplified in accordance with the modeling aims. The model is implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC and tested against CERN measurements where accurate model responses are observed. The SPS model is used to gain understanding of the power quality issues at CERN´s 18 kV bus. A new controller is developed for the 150 MVAr SVC which is normally used for SPS reactive power compensation. The feedforward controller is based on fast measurements of DC side SPS variables enabling estimation of SPS power variations. The new controller demonstrates reduction in the 18 kV AC voltage peaks during SPS cycles
