Abstract :
The analogy between particle and electromagnetic waves equations is shown. Carrier and radiation confinement in two lasers is compared. Both have four quantum wells and separate radiation confinement, which is abrupt in one and graded index in the other (GRINSCH or graded index separate confinement heterostructure). It is shown that the latter may have a higher overlap factor. A common numerical model can solve the equations describing both confinements
