Abstract
A grating composed of successive layers of left-handed (LH) and right-handed (RH) materials is investigated. It is shown that, in this structure, unlike gratings of purely RH materials, there exist pairs of complex modes without which a complete modal analysis is not possible. Complex propagation constants of these modes are determined by solving an analytical characteristic equation.
