Abstract
The author discusses the advent of quality management systems, their rapid growth in popularity, and their benefits to service industries such as electricity utilities. The meaning of quality in this context is defined, and the essential elements of quality management systems are listed. A brief discussion of a typical quality management system is presented. This discussion is based on the author´s experience in assisting the electricity department of a local authority with implementing an ISO 9000 based quality management system
