Abstract
There can be little doubt that the role of simulation in the design and analysis of variable speed drives is becoming increasingly important. A number of factors influence the choice of simulation tool and the approach adopted. Some of the important lessons learnt regarding the use of simulation and design tools are highlighted with reference to three practical applications. The paper concludes with a comparison of the major simulation packages used within the Power Electronics Division of Cegelec Projects Ltd. and draws conclusions on the suitability of the tools for the various jobs
