Abstract :
The threat of a tsunami in coastal communities is considerable, especially in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Presently, the method of detection relies on bottom-pressure recorders connected to buoys. Another type of detection, which relies on microwave radiometry for deep-ocean sensing of tsunami, is proposed. Microwave radiometers are proposed that operate onboard satellites in a constellation that can provide earth coverage of susceptible areas for tsunami generation. The space-based detection system should be compared to the current buoy system to determine which of the two systems best protects communities at risk.
