Abstract :
A novel flow control scheme for communication networks is presented and analyzed. The scheme, called backlog controlled multiple access (BCMA), is an extension of ALOHA or more sophisticated multiple-access channels. It is based on an implicit control mechanism optimizing channel traffic by controlling the backlogged users. The rationale of BCMA and an example of the control process are presented. The main advantages of BCMA over conventional systems are high throughput and low blocking in the normal operation range; no breakdown in overload conditions; low access delay even at high traffic; very simple implementation, because no explicit feedback is required; and robustness against wrong traffic estimations by the central controller
