Abstract :
Personal communications is defined as a service concept which will evolve from existing radio-based services such as cellular, cordless, paging, etc., and will use existing and planned fixed and mobile infrastructures to the greatest extent practicable. The author outlines some of the international standards work in this area currently being carried out by CCIR/CCITT, in particular, that of CCIR Interim Working Party 8/13 on Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunication Systems (FPLMTS). The importance of a flexible standard capable of adaptation to different propagation conditions and service demands is illustrated in terms of some of the various possible improvements in system performance
