Abstract
A digitized acquisition system for recording the electroretinogram (ERG) of an isolated rat retina is presented. The system is used to study the effects of three distinct buffering agents (Trizma alone, Hepes alone, and a combination of prebubbled bicarbonate with Hepes) on the viability of the ERG. Amplitude of the a-wave, its decay over time, and absence or presence of the b-wave were monitored. Preliminary results indicate that bicarbonate is a necessary ingredient in the buffer system for long term viability of the retina
