  • Abstract
Illustrates how a satellite paging system may be overlayed on an existing terrestrial paging system. It is concluded that, in order to provide an acceptable standard of service under anticipated propagation conditions relating to the highway environments, a powerful coding scheme is required. Such a scheme, using MFSK, Reed-Solomon coding and dual time diversity transmission promises to provide the required performance. The laboratory tests carried out to date confirm the performance predictions, in particular they confirm the robustness of MFSK to channel perturbations, such as Doppler and fading. The planned field trials are anticipated to confirm the performance predictions and provide much valuable information concerning the performance of the transmission format under realistic conditions
