The use of MATLAB in model based processing

There are a number of reasons for MATLAB´s popularity: a powerful graphics engine; interpretation rather than compilation for ease of use; mathematically intuitive constructions. This discussion focuses on the last of these issues: the fact that MATLAB manipulates data in a way which is (often) intuitive to mathematicians rather than in a way which is efficient for computation (as in languages such as C, for example).
