Abstract
Sliding mode speed control of a self controlled synchronous motor (SCSM) is presented. The states of the motor needed for sliding mode speed control, speed and acceleration, are estimated dynamically using an adaptive state observer (ASO). The widely known Luenberger Observer cannot estimate accurately when the system parameters vary. Therefore, good sliding mode speed control of the SCSM is not possible with Luenberger observers. However, the ASO used estimates the system parameters as well as the system states. It is shown that the ASO provides quite accurate state estimates, even when the system parameters vary. Therefore, good sliding mode control (SLMC) of the SCSM is achieved. The effectiveness of the ASO under varying system parameters is shown in the simulation results. The design of the adaptive state observer and the sliding mode speed controller of the SCSM is presented. Simulation results are given to show the potential of the control scheme
