Abstract
The authors propose the new thyristor-controlled static VAR compensator (SVC) be used in starting of large induction motor loads and to improve the feeding network voltage profile during the starting period. Superiority of static VAr compensator starting over the traditional shunt fixed capacitor starting is illustrated. The authors show that the SVC limits the voltage dips during starting, eliminates the overvoltages-resulting from its shunt capacitive part-at the end of starting, and minimizes both of the initial inrush currents and starting periods
