Abstract
A data structure classification scheme based on a study of a large set of spreadsheets is presented. A distinction is made between logical and physical data structures, and their relationship is described. The classification of data structures is then used to formulate a mechanism called structured spreadsheet calculation. The basic building blocks of structured spreadsheets are the logical data structures which correspond to the logical data collections of the application. They can be arranged on the screen to obtain the desired physical layout. As all spreadsheet operations refer to logical data structures and not to the physical layout, the possibility of error decreases. Moreover, the system contains ready-made plans, i.e. implementations of goals such as the cumulative sum of a number sequence
