Abstract :
The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is increasingly recognized in image and video compression standards, as indicated by its use in JPEG2000. The lifting scheme algorithm is an alternative DWT implementation that has a lower computational complexity. In this paper, a new lifting scheme DWT architecture with minimum resource requirements is presented. The proposed architecture is pipelined, modular, and utilizes the hardware resources to their maximum. The proposed architecture has been implemented in VHDL and has been synthesized on a Xilinx Virtex2 XCV1000. Simulation results indicate that the resource requirement for implementing a two dimensional DWT with the new architecture is reduced to one third with the same clock frequency as the conventional scheme. The high throughput and reduced resource requirement has made this architecture the proper choice for real time multimedia applications such as Digital Cinema
