  • Abstract
In November 2009, RESON successfully demonstrated the capability of an integrated underwater intruder detection system composed entirely of COTS products. The following capabilities were demonstrated against both re-breather equipped combat swimmers and divers using open cycle SCUBA: 1) Ability to automatically detect an underwater intruder at long range, localize, and establish a track. 2) Vector a response vessel to the intruder. 3) Reacquire the intruder with separate sonar on the response vessel and display interception data both on the vessel and in the Command Center. 4) Correctly classify the intruder as a diver (vs. a marine mammal). This paper describes the test geometry, presents AVIs of the displays, and discusses lessons learned. Deterrence capability has since been added to the system, significantly extending its usefulness.
