Abstract
It is important that a shaft train torsional analysis is carried out for all systems driven by synchronous motors. During starting, either by direct on-line or by using a variable frequency supply, the motor generates oscillatory air gap torques which excite a torsional response throughout the shaft system. The authors show that by implementing a torsional response study for a salient pole motor at an early stage in the design of a shaft system, high oscillatory torques can be avoided
