Abstract
The influence of saturation on the dynamic performance of a vector-controlled salient-pole synchronous machine has been investigated. The design of the current controllers has been based on state-variable approach, but using a linear machine model. Results of computer simulations based on the linear model show that the implemented current control yields optimal control response both at standstill and during acceleration. However, these results are too optimistic since in reality saturation plays an important role as experimentally verified. The control system has been implemented on a 5 kW synchronous machine drive and experimental results have been obtained which show that the implemented control system gives optimal control response for a certain set of parameters at a certain level of saturation. However, it is shown that the control response is not optimal if the saturation level is changed without retuning the controllers. It follows that optimal current control requires the application of adaptive controllers
