Abstract
When correlation functions are employed with the modulating function method the question arises as to what is the best time relationship between the modulation functions and the correlation functions. This paper explores this matter and finds that there are significant gains in the accuracy of the parameter estimation if the modulating functions are aligned with the peak of the cross-correlation function. Section 2 of the paper briefly reviews the Hermite modulating function method and, gives a matrix technique for estimating errors caused by using a model of order lower than the system order, and analyses the benefits of aligning the modulating functions with the peak of the cross-correlation function formed from the system´s input and output signals
