Abstract
The DIDAMES project is designed to demonstrate, by means of videoconferencing, the application of local and wide area broadband communications-and the integration of narrowband networks-within the application environment of distributed industrial design and manufacturing processes of electronic subassemblies (PCB-CAD/CAM), including their related distributed management activities. The distributed application being realized by the DIDAMES project requires the use of high performance international communications links, as would be provided by IBCN. It continuously generates substantial bursts of data traffic on the wide area network. In order to bring the full benefits of the IBCN to the user, state of the art local area networks are being selected, such as needed for the efficient implementation of the application pilot. Wherever the bandwidth available will turn out to be bottleneck, very advanced real time data compression techniques and/or delta coding techniques will be applied
