Abstract :
A consortium consisting of PTT Finland, Regional Telephone Companies, with Nokia, Teleste and Lohja as industrial partners and the State Technical Research Center of Finland has been studying a strategy for fibre to the home. The strategy is aimed at new residential areas, where by a smooth introduction of fibre to the subscriber access network, the target is to obtain a penetration of a few percent in the later 1990s, when the implementation of broadband services to homes may start. The introduction of fibre to the subscriber access network will be done purely for economic reasons. These will be achieved by means of the advantage provided by implementing a rational common fibre network for telephony and cable-TV. The authors discuss these basic services as well as the cost analysis and the strategy for implementing this technology
