Abstract
Spatial transform coding with variable-length coding has been widely applied for image compression because of its high coding efficiency. The proposed bit-assignment techniques for such systems are mostly based on applying a plurality of encoding tables, as statistically different types of data have to be encoded. However, the multiplexing of codewords originated from various encoding tables considerably complicates the design of a self-synchronizing code. This paper describes a bit-assignment technique which makes use of a single encoding table while maintaining the coding efficiency. A self-synchronizing code suited for this algorithm will be presented
