Abstract :
A variational approach is used to reduce the governing equation in the case of a periodic dispersion-managed soliton transmission line to a coupled set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The phase-plane dynamics of the reduced system, particularly the existence and stability characteristics of the fixed-points, are analyzed. We consider the cases in which the average dispersion is anomalous, zero or normal. The obtained results are valid for an arbitrary pulse profile. However, we will consider particularly the Gaussian and the super-Gaussian type pulses. This study is then extended further to the case of birefringent fibers. Finally, the adiabatic evolution of the dispersion-managed pulse parameters under different perturbations is obtained
