Abstract :
HDTV will come like all the other techniques and services in a very progressive manner. The main difficulty is to find a way to make an economically viable introduction through a quite complicated chain or producers, broadcasters, cable operators, and telecommunication companies. With this background, the author looks firstly at the areas of application of HDTV, discussing the production standards for broadcasting, non-broadcast applications and broadcast standards. Then he considers the target of HDTV services, specifically the increase in definition and aspect ratio. Finally, service quality is covered briefly
