Abstract
The authors conducted research which was based on a number of surveys of families in both rural and number areas. The aim was to establish: the socio-economic needs of the rural inhabitants of Kwazulu for a viable telecommunications network; the rural-urban telecommunication links in Kwazulu/Natal; and the viability of a public telecommunications network for Kwazulu which might also be appropriate for other areas displaying similar characteristics
