Abstract :
Discusses a generative process planning system for turned components. The knowledge based system was called EXCAP. The acquisition of knowledge is an essential part of developing an expert system. Having outlined several techniques for knowledge elicitation the authors describe the technique they used. This involved shadowing the engineer (or expert) as he went about his task, asking questions if necessary and when possible holding interviews with the expert. Prototypes were constructed and discussed with the expert. The authors also briefly discuss planning mechanisms, and knowledge representation integration with NC generation program and the performance of EXCAP. Plans for future work are also briefly discussed
