Abstract
Predictive CAQ (constant area quantization) has been applied to interframe image bandwidth compression using computer simulation. For the type of images studied it has been demonstrated that a simple prediction algorithm based on frame differences can be used to produce significant improvement in picture quality as well as bit rate reduction as compared to 2-dimensional ATDM. Alternate line ATDM provides a further reduction in data rate at the expense of a slightly degraded image. A pseudo real time image evaluation facility has been developed to allow studies of various image coding schemes to be carried out on a general purpose computer whilst allowing the resulting sequence of images to be viewed at real time rates
