Abstract :
An integrated optic AEO (acousto-electro-optic) Bragg region device which uses SAW (surface acoustic wave) and interdigital electrooptic transducers in conjunction with optical surface waveguides in lithium niobate has been demonstrated. This device has been used as a light modulator and beam deflector; it can also potentially realize fundamental operations such as convolution, correlation, and analog multiplication for matrix processing. An integrated optical device, consisting of a Ti in-diffused optical waveguide in LiNbO3 and two interdigital transducers, was investigated. Because the optical waveguide confines most of the light within the AEO interaction region, Bragg diffraction efficiencies approaching 100% have been obtained at SAW frequencies near 180 MHz. A coupled-mode theory analysis of AEO Bragg diffraction, accounting for the effects of incident light polarization, is also presented
