Abstract :
The paper discusses issues related to the design and development of a high data rate X-band transmitter using GaAs MESFET MMICs. The design considerations discussed especially concern the mass, power and space constraints usually encountered in low earth orbit (LEO) satellite (of 100 kg class) systems. The feasibility of using COTS electrical components, as an alternative to military or space-qualified parts, is addressed. System bandwidth is the major design requirement for high data rate transmission. Optimal techniques for modulation and frequency conversion that are vital for the best utilization of available bandwidth are discussed. The detailed design of the transmitter is discussed.
