Abstract
A generating system has been described, which allows a 3 phase squirrel cage generator to be driven by a water turbine which also drives mechanical grain milling machines. The system guarantees a minimum of 386 W from one voltage regulated phase, over a speed range of 1350-1660 RPM a nominal regulated voltage of 210 V. The voltage is regulated by phase controlled dump loads on the other two phases, the heat from which can be used for cooking etc. Although there are limitations to the system such as regulator noise, unbalanced use of the generator, the system is simple, rugged, needs minimum maintenance and is cheap. Two such system have been operating satisfactorily in Nepal for two years. It is hoped that it will assist in increasing the quality of life of some of those in developing countries
