Abstract
Shows how smart cards can solve the problems encountered by TV operators and how smart cards provide new business opportunities in pay-TV. To reach this objective, the starting point is to explain how smart cards are used in existing applications, including the benefits for the smart cards issuer. Smart cards applications are classified depending on three different usages. First, different possibilities exists for the payment of services; second, smart cards can be used as a portable file; third, smart cards are also used for access control and security. Schlumberger developed systems for customers in each of these usages of smart cards
