Abstract
Proposes a CSMA with n collision permission (CSMA/NCP) system for accommodating CSMA/CD terminals to a wide area ATM network. CSMA/NCP includes two main algorithms. One is access control, in which for purposes of congestion control, adapters do not send any cells while they are receiving cells. The other is a strategy for maintaining the network quality, in which adapters use an ATM path at 1/n speed of the user network interface (UNI). The system throughput and packet loss rate are estimated. The results indicate that the throughput is high and packet loss rate is low and CSMA/NCP is useful, regardless of how long the distances between terminals are. The authors also demonstrate a way in which the most suitable collision permission number can be determined
