  • Abstract
From his experience as engineer, manager and management consultant the author believes that a director´s job is to determine strategy, set up the environment for it´s execution and then delegate the work to managers. This requires a blend of entrepreneur and leader with business, financial and chairmanship skills as well as professional specialist skills. To find these in one person is rare. A most important skill of the chief executive is to grow a team which provides these skills and then manage it so that conflict is productive rather than destructive. The author discusses the transition from manager to director, the qualities of the individual director, and blending the top management team
