Abstract :
This paper presents some early results from two projects at King´s College which examine high quality, low bit rate coding of audio, both music and speech. One approach uses wavelets, which offer advantages over polyphase filter banks in MPEG at low bit rates. The other approach uses the long established linear predictive coding technique, but in a modified guise, with orders significantly higher than 10. It also plans to use pattern recognition techniques in time-frequency space for added compression, and a novel implementation style for recursive filters which enables high orders to be used in re-synthesis
