Abstract :
A 5 Gbit/s transmission system experiment using a multiple quantum well (MQW) semiconductor optical amplifier as an external modulator is demonstrated over 100 km of conventional single mode fibre. A detection sensitivity of -34.6 dBm was obtained using an optically preamplified receiver. It is shown that a MQW laser operated in high saturation and driven by a preequalised RF amplifier, is capable of digital modulation beyond 5 Gbit/s. The effect of residual chirp introduced by the modulator was investigated in 5 Gbit/s amplitude shift keying (ASK) transmission experiments
