Abstract
Describes how a Kalman filter can be used to tune SCADA systems and improve the measurement of paper qualities on a reel-to-reel basis. A rigorous statistical analysis looking at substance, caliper, moisture and ash suggested a need for a review of some aspects of the QC procedures for moisture, further investigation of substance and improved calibration of the SCADA values for ash and caliper. Ash was singled out for further consideration because of the financial rewards for controlling ash precisely. The focus of this paper concerns the next stage of this project. This was to try and find a way to better calibrate the SCADA ash values
