Abstract :
The replacement of the New Haven catenary system is discussed from the viewpoint of the engineering processes involved in the planning and design of this replacement project. In studying the replacement system, catenary systems worldwide were examined to determine their suitability. One major constraint was the existing support structure spacing of 300 ft. The pantograph study indicated that all existing and proposed pantographs were compatible with the existing system as well as with all of the proposed replacement systems. The railroad is now in the process of seeking bids for the reconstruction effort
