  • Abstract
The paper explains a scheme for monitoring and diagnosing a plant in real time. This approach is based on application of system theory and artificial intelligence. System theory assists in obtaining information from the plant. This is done by constructing a mathematical model of plant. Comparing outputs from the real plant and its model provides useful information concerning the state of the system. Artificial intelligence provides powerful methods for inference. Some of these procedures are applied to construct an inference engine. This engine has two levels of intelligence. The low level does simple reasoning in real time, high level carries out more detailed reasoning. A set of intelligent pointers guide the reasoning process on the data obtained from the system
