Abstract
A design method is proposed that optimises the design of flexible manufacturing systems. The attribute design method (ADM) integrates 3D modelling, a new classification and coding system, a 2-layer backpropagation neural network and financial appraisal techniques. The method was developed in detail for the TIM welding system. The emphasis of this paper is to demonstrate the applicability of the ADM to optimising the design of flexible manufacturing systems
