Abstract
At the beginning of 1990, Nuclear Electric plc, then a Division of the CEGB, placed a contract with GEC ALSTHOM Transformers Limited of Stafford for the design, supply and installation of the main transformers for the Sizewell B electrical system. The main objective of this paper is to describe the quality assurance philosophies applied to the design of these transformers to ensure that the performance requirements were met in full and to describe how these philosophies were converted into a practical working system. The paper does not set out to present a detailed technical appreciation of the transformers themselves but rather, to demonstrate that by addressing quality in the design and design processes, reliable and efficient items of high value, capital equipment result from the partnership in quality between supplier and customer
