Abstract :
Process systems control and instrumentation (C&I) can be considered under two general categorisations, firstly, process fluid systems C&I, and secondly, a number of specific instrumentation systems for individual functions in the plant. Here, the author describes how the Sizewell B process systems control and instrumentation requires the supply, installation and commissioning of a considerable number of items of hardware. These amount to some 226 panels, 98 racks, and well over 1000 locally-maintained devices. The instrument tubing required will be of the order of 12 kilometres, with a correspondingly large number of instrument isolating and test valve manifolds and tube fittings. The author details how the engineering design has involved a sizable team of engineers, working in close collaboration with Nuclear Electric over a period of over five years to date. The manufacture, installation, and commissioning are also requiring the services of a large number of people, all working in a coordinated programme to ensure the completion of Sizewell B to the customer´s programme and budget
