Abstract :
A prototype network, the Fairisle network, provides dedicated links to a workstation with a line rate of the order of 100 Mbit/s. These links are interconnected through a mesh of fast packet switches (FPS). The network provides an infrastructure for end-to-end cell delivery over which one or more transport protocols can operate. Transport protocols for a multiservice network such as Fairisle are discussed. The requirements of different types of user-service are described. Differences in these requirements, in terms of the transfer of user information, point to the adoption of a range of transport protocols. The author has identified the management of transport connections as a particular problem that has received less attention to date. An architecture for connection management that is appropriate for all services is described. He concludes with some pointers towards future developments in this area
