Abstract
The author briefly discusses the advantages of optical fibre sensors. The author then describes a sensor which is to be retrofitted to a range of steam driven turbines operating in hazardous atmospheres. The prototype, which uses a two-fibre reflective probe to detect light pulses from a tape wrapped around the turbine output shaft, is described as is its operation. Performance data for the sensor is given
