Abstract :
The creation of a computer assisted learning environment requires a combination of factors such as linguistics, cognitive engineering, psychology, artificial intelligence and computer assisted learning. In order to develop such an environment the choice of subject area must not only be able to illustrate such requirements but must have wide applications. The subject area chosen in this case was linear programming. The teaching aspects of the system are complemented with a query system permitting users to fully interrogate the system about the subject of linear programming. The ability to investigate and extend their understanding involves two sections: terminology definition and user-defined problem solving. The system retains records of the users and adjusts their study programs accordingly throughout their use of the system. The authors extend and challenge current ideas in CAL systems design thus advancing an alternative design structure
