Abstract
Serco Systems Limited are currently developing for the UK Department of Transport (DOT) a prototype system for the control of variable message signs (VMS), using the Paknet public radio data communications service. The system under development is being designed not only for the control of VMS in remote areas but also to meet the requirements of the DOT´s specification TR 2067. This specification relates to the standard RS485 Communications protocols and data formats for the National Motorways Communication System II (NMCSII). The developments described resulted from a revision to the system techniques forming part of Serco´s contract with the DOT for the supply of control equipment for the traffic management systems on the approaches to the new Dartford-Thurrock Bridge River Crossing
