Abstract
The author discusses the basic physics underlying the evanescent field biosensor and the requirements for surface plasmon generation. The practical realisation of such immunosensors is also examined. The combination of surface plasmon resonance and fluorescence immunoassay to give a surface plasmon resonance enhanced fluorescence immunoassay is proposed
